Arriving in Canyon Lake, TX

This begins our first week of the disaster project in Wimberly, Texas.  It is a very large job with a very large crew in a very large state.  You will understand therefore the length  of this week's blog.

We drove from Falfurrias into "the hill country"

Great views on our route to and from work.

Our camp is near this ranch in the hill country.

This is the campground at Quest Ranch which is a Christian Mission base.  The owner recruiits volunteers to help rebuild homes for needy people in the area.  Our church sponsor, North Shore United Methodist Church, made arrangements with the Ranch to provide our campsites.

They did a great job setting up campsites in the middle of these live oak trees and cypress trees.
Sunday night we all got together for a grillfest.  This is Larry, Jeanne, Marty, Carol and Suzanne.
Woody, Nancy,  Norm, Pat and Keith
Kris and Stel (caught me with a mouthful) and guess who is taking the pictures (Jodi)
This is the house we will be working on for a while,  This is in Wimberly, TX approximately 20 miles north of our campsites.  This area was hit with incredibly heavy rainstorms on Memorial Day,  2015.  Within hours the rain caused the stream behind the house to rise all the way to the house so that several feet of  water was inside the house.
This is the stream that runs behind this house.
This shows the house from the stream to show you how far  the water spread.
The deck was totally ripped from the house.  They are in the process of attempting to jack the deck back up the the house.  Don't know if they will be successful without dismantling it.
This is a huge house with a master bedroom and bath, 2 other bedrooms, another bathroom,
Living room and dining room,
Kitchen/dinette and 3rd bedroom.
Kitchen,
and "great room".  NOMADS have been here for 2 weeks already and replaced the insulation and drywall throughout the house.
They also began "mudding" and now most are involved in the sanding as is Suzanne here,
and Carol here,
Jeanne and Stel here
and Pat here.
Woody is removings doors.
Keith and Kris sanding and cleaning the floor in the third bedroom.
Then back to the mudding with Kris "in the closet"
Stel and Larry in kitchen and dining room
Suzanne mudding in the bedroom
Jeanne and Carol planning where to mud next.
next is cleaning up from the drywall dust,
Nancy and Jodi taping and covering windows with plastic in preparation for the "texturing" process
and covering the floors.
Removing and or covering light fixtures
and removing vent covers.
The bow window had leaked and was rotted so Stel and Larry begin tearout
to replace damaged parts.
Hope we can figure out how to put it back together.
Using old parts as a partial pattern.
Rebuilding the window despite very thorny bushes and a wire fence.
Woody and Norm waiting for Keith and Marty as the foursome travels to another home to install drywall.  No pictures of the other location but will try next week.
Kris, Jeanne, Suzanne priming the walls preparing for texturing.
Carol adding more paper to cover floors
Kris and Suzanne removing more fans and light fixtures.
End of day cleanup sessions.
adding insulation to the kitchen side of the garage.
Finally get a picture of Pat without her mask and what does she do?
Just up the street from our worksite are some unusual metal sculptures.  This armadillo
and these two mustangs. Both survived the floods.
We are 35 miles from San Antonio and this weekend they are having a "cattle drive"and parade down Houston Street to the Alamo preparing for the annual rodeo.
Longhorns and cowboys
cowboys on horses
and cowgirls on horses
and cowboys on steers.
and kids of all ages.
This is cowboy country at it's best.  Looking forward to next week.
