Weeks 2 & 3, Odem First UMC, Texas

At the beginning of the second week in Odem at Gracie's house, the team painted the siding that was installed previously by the other team.

Sandy painted from the ladder

and Sam painted from the scaffold.

Stel and Dave removed the old storm door

and added framing & trim for the new door

which included replacing rotted  supports between floor joists and a trip under the house.

Lou continued repairing/replacing electrical

Suzanne and Judy planned and placed starter strips for the siding,

Sam replaced the locks on the front door to match the locks on the side door.

After finishing the storm door, Dave and Stel prepped the front for siding trim.

Sam & Sandy helped Jodi with painting the siding in prep for installation,

and Lou began installing window trim on the east side while Sam helped Judy and Suzanne install the siding.

Next day, Lou, Sam, Sandy & Suzanne continued siding installation

and Judy joined Dave & Stel to install the front.

The team on the east are reaching the limit for ladders

so they began moving the scaffold from the west

by creating a trail over the sand.

Then they put it to use.

Dave and Stel have created a "scaffold" using ladders and 2x10's.

There was a delay in the siding installation to replace the mailbox that one of us (not Jodi or me) ran over on the way home yesterday.

Now that's fixed and we get back to work.

Dave and Stel created another scaffold for the high places

but extra safety measures are sometimes needed.

Sam installs the last piece on the east

and Jodi continues to paint siding.

Sam, Suzanne and Sandy are caulking seams

and painting where needed.

While Judy and Dave cut the next pieces,

Stel paints the facia that we installed last year.

Lou installs a new support post for the air conditioner

and at the end of the 3rd week, the siding installation is complete.

First Week First UMC, Odem, Tx

We returned to Odem First United Methodist Church for their community outreach project.  Last year we rebuilt the porch roof on Gracie's house and we return this year to work on the siding.  Another NOMADS team just left after having removed the old siding on the west side and front of the house.  They also jacked up the house and installed more support pillars to stabilize the house and installed insulation and house wrap on the 2 sides and hardee board siding on the west side.  Our job is to complete the front side, remove siding on the east side and install insulation and house wrap and siding.

We begin by looking at the finished side because there is concern that the siding is not stable  around this window.
Stel and Dave will remove the window and add studding to support the siding before reinstalling the window.
Judy and Sandy begin working on the east side to remove all the old siding and celotex.

Demolition reveals the need for a lot of insulation and

there are a lot of rotted studs so we will remove the damage and replace  with new under the rear window

and the front window and install insulation.
All the insulation is installed so
Suzanne, Elaine, Judy, Stel and Dave complete the wrap on the east side.
Lou spent the entire week installing lights, replacing switches and receptacles and running new electric lines for the air conditioner, dryer and other circuits while Sam replaced leaking plumbing and installed a new dryer vent.

Meanwhile on the west side, Sam paints the trim
and Sandy
and Suzanne paint the siding on the west while
Elaine and Jodi prepaint all the siding for the rest of the house.
To avoid the problem discovered on the west side, Stel is adding studs to the sides of the front windows so the the siding has a place to be attached.

We tried to repair the storm door unsuccessfully so at the end of the week, we begin work on a new storm door but the day is over so we will complete this next week.
In the evening on Thursday, the church served a potluck dinner for all the NOMADS and we were most grateful.
