Final Week in Rio Grande City, Texas

Final week in Rio Grande City, TX

On Sunday, St. John's FUMC had a pot luck meal after church in our honor.

As you can see, it was very well attended and

there was more than enough good food for everyone.

On Monday, we were back at work but at a new home further east of town.

This is Isabel's house where all the windows are in disrepair and leaking badly.

This old door for the water heater had been boarded over when they moved the water heater outside.  The covering plywood is badly rotted and animals have been getting into the space.

The trim for all the windows is either missing

or rotted and

will need to be replaced.  The door hear does not open and you can see daylight at the top and bottom from inside.  We are not totally sure what to do with it but will figure out something because she needs an emergency exit.

Gary and Avis start tearing off the trim.

Stel starts removing the old caulk above the windows.

Avis paints a piece of existing trim that actually does not need to be replaced.

Stel and Gary tear off the cover where the water heater had been to determine what can be done to replace it.

Jodi began painting trim first thing in the AM and Avis pitches in to help so that we can begin replacing trim as soon as possible.

Stel & Gary estimate how much material will be needed.

There are trees and bushes up against the house all around so Stel is trimming them all back to access our work area.

Jerry joins Stel on day 2 to see what can be done with this window.  There is no glass in the bottom sash but she wants a window so we are assessing what we can do to accomplish that for her. (This is the window in the first picture above after we remove the particle board)

We got some plexiglass  and are cutting it to fit the opening. We drove around for a while and tried to find a complete window to fit but no luck new or used.

glass being installed.

Cleaning to top so it can be covered.  Top sash is not fixable.

A quarter sheet of plywood is being painted by Jan to cover the top.

Avis and Gary begin installing trim and

Avis puts caulk in all the old holes to attempt to stop the leaks.

More new trim.

Jan brushing the old lattice with a little paint to perk it up.

The new plywood is ready to install.

The trim in the rear has all been replaced.

And now that new window gets it's trim.

Jan adds a bead of caulk over the top of the windows.

Jerry and Stel begin investigating how to fix this door.
Then Stel and Avis noodle it over

And they finally work out a plan and

Stel cuts some "chunks" to stuff in there and they finally get it working and all the holes plugged.

Meanwhile, Jerry gives the bathroom door a lockset (didn't have one when we got here)

and a final look at that window in the first picture

and a final look at the emergency exit door.

Thursday, the final day, we spent back at the church.

Stel and Jodi trim the trees along the driveway.

Jenny and John finish up trim on the church.  The rest of the team clean sidewalks and work on electricl connections and still others are still laying tile in that bathroom from last week. But our work here is done now.

Jodi no longer just thinks she is Wonder Woman.

But for sure, we are both princesses. 😄😃😃😂😂
Next week, Odem, Texas.
